Sierra Q & A's

DOHC Induction

I have a 2 litre DOHC Sierra Sapphire, non-injection, with a recently fitted Stage One engine from Specialised Engines plus a Janspeed manifold and Peco exhaust system. Is it possible to swap the injection manifold and EEC IV injection system from an injected engine or would I be better off with twin carburettors?   John Stevenson, Aberdeen

Fitting the inlet manifold by itself won't be any good because the injectors on the DOHC engine sit in the head, so you'd have to change the head as well. You've already got a Stage One non-injection head and fitting a standard injection head would give less power. There's also the considerable expense and hassle of fitting the EEC IV injection system which would involve an awful lot of work for very little improvement. I don't know anyone who makes a manifold to take twin carbs for this engine as it has never been very popular in the tuning stakes, but if you can find a manifold, a pair of Weber DCOE's should tune well to your Stage One head. At the moment you've got a single Weber 28/32 TLDM which unfortunately isn't the most tuneable carb made by Weber as the choke venturis are fixed and cant be changed.

I had a word with Webcon who say they don't do an uprated carb for the DOHC engine but they suggest that, with the new head and exhaust a session on a rolling road trying different jets in the TDLM together with a free-flow air filter, e.g.. K&N should see a worth-while improvement.
